Why is the new Barbie movie rated pg-13: Everything We Know So Far

Since it was announced in 2019 that Margot Robbie would play the famous Malibu Barbie doll in a real-life movie, fans have been eager to learn more. In the last 20 years, there have been several animated Barbie movies, but Robbie says that the movie coming out in 2023 will be “the thing you didn’t know you wanted.”

The movie will be based on a story that Greta Gerwig (Little Women, Lady Bird) and her husband, director Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story), wrote together. Warner Bros., Mattel, and Robbie’s production business, LuckyChap Entertainment, are all co-producers. We still need to learn much about Gerwig’s Barbie movie, but here is everything we know.

Barbie Movie Plot

The story of the PG-13 comedy movie can be summed up as a trip of self-discovery. Barbie is kicked out of Barbieland because she is different and doesn’t follow the rules for how a doll should look and act. She goes on a quest to the real world, where she learns that what she thought about beauty and happiness was wrong. She has to save Barbieland before it’s too late.

Robbie told E News on the red carpet of the 2023 Golden Globes that the movie will “blow your mind” and has “different vibes” than her most recent film, Babylon. In an interview with WSJ Magazine in 2022, Ferrell also gave away some more hints about the movie: “It’s a loving tribute to the brand and couldn’t be more satirical at the same time. It’s an amazing comment on male patriarchy and women in society and why Barbie is criticized, but every little girl still wants to play with her.”

Warner Brothers’ character pictures show that other stars, like America Ferrera and Will Ferrell, play human roles. Michael Cera will play Allan, the only male doll who is not Ken.

Midge, Allan’s pregnant wife, will be played by Emerald Fennell, and Helen Mirren will be the movie’s narrator.
