Jailer Movie Review:

Jailor is a Tamil action thriller film that marks the comeback of superstar Rajinikanth after his last film, Annaatthe, failed to woo the audience. Nelson Dilipkumar, known for his quirky and original films like Kolamavu Nightingale and Doctor, directed the film. Mohanlal, Jackie Shroff, Shiva Rajkumar, Sunil, Vinayakan, Ramya Krishnan, Tamannaah, Yogi Babu, Radin Kingsley, and Vasanth Ravi also play important roles in the film. Anirudh Ravichander composed the soundtrack for the film, making it his third collaboration with Rajinikanth after Petta and Darbar.

The plot focuses on the jailer (Rajinikanth), a retired officer who lives peacefully with his daughter (Tamanna) and son-in-law (Vasanth Ravi). However, her history begins to haunt her when she receives a strange phone call from an unknown person who threatens to harm her family if she does not participate. The jailer immediately realizes that he is being drawn into a deadly operation involving some strong underworld and government men. He also finds a secret connection with the caller, who turns out to be his long-lost brother (Mohanlal). The events that follow test the devotion, bravery, and morality of the jailer.

Jailor is a film that pays the utmost respect to Rajinikanth’s popularity and personality. In the film, Rajinikanth appears in a charming and dynamic persona reflecting his youth. He gives a strong performance as the jailer, a lofty and high-ranking man. He also displays his unique gestures and lines, which garnered applause from the audience. Along with Tamannaah, who plays his daughter, he also dances to a peppy track composed by Anirudh Ravichander.

Other actors like Mohanlal, Jackie Shroff, Shiva Rajkumar, and Suniel make dynamic cameos in the film. Mohanlal plays the jailer’s brother, who has a dark and complex personality. She performed many dramatic scenes with Rajinikanth and showcased her acting skills. Jackie Shroff plays a crooked politician who serves as the principal antagonist of the film. He also had differences with Rajinikanth and Mohanlal. Shiva Rajkumar plays the role of an honest officer who helps the jailer in his mission. He also appears in many action scenes with Rajinikanth. Sunil is a comedy relief character who is a friend and co-worker of the jailer.

Nelson Dilipkumar directed the picture, which successfully balances public appeal and performance-driven elements. He has portrayed Rajinikanth in a new light and given him engaging character development. He added some comedy and passion to the picture, as well as some exciting action moments. However, the picture has several shortcomings, including poor writing, logical errors, and a slow pace. Sometimes, the picture lacks logic and continuity and relies heavily on coincidences and features. The film lags in the second half as well and loses the attention of the audience.

Critics and viewers have different things to say about the movie. Some people liked the movie’s wide appeal, Rajinikanth’s performance, and Nelson’s direction. Other people didn’t like the movie’s bad script, logical mistakes, and slow pace. I found the following Jailer Movie reviews:

  • Koimoi gave the film 3.5 stars out of 5 and said that Jailer is “Rajinikanth looking at the phenomenon he created in wide angle, somewhere accepting his age finally, but Rajni style doesn’t fade even an inch.”
  • MSN gave the film 4 stars out of 5 and said that Jailer is “an out and out Rajinikanth show with the dynamic cameos of Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar.”
  • The Hans India gave the film 2.5 stars out of 5 and said that Jailer is “a superstar cop who fails to arrest the audience’s attention till the end.”
  • Onmanorama gave the film 3 stars out of 5 and said that Jailer is “Rajinikanth roaring back to form in this mass entertainer.”
  • The Times of India gave the film 3.5 stars out of 5 and said that Jailer is “a blockbuster action entertainer from Rajinikanth and Nelson.”
  • Bing gave the film a summary review and said that Jailer works but in parts. When it’s good, it’s very good. But when it’s bad, it just drags.

Overall, Jailor is a film that works in bits and pieces. When it’s great, it’s great. However, when it wears down, it stretches easily. The film is mostly for Rajinikanth fans, who will love his screen presence and charm. Others may see it as a generic entertainer made better with tighter scripting and editing.
