During his time at Texas A&M, the college star became a well-known name. The star Aggies quarterback, who was known as “Johnny Football”, won the Heisman Trophy in 2012 for his 47 total scores and his exciting, “devil-may-care” style of play.

Unfortunately, Manzil was just as sloppy off the field, and he was not as attractive there. In fact, many of the floor’s problems outside of football led to the end of his short NFL career. But his road to the NFL was a difficult one because of problems off the field, such as his battles with drug abuse and mental health issues. Even though he showed flashes of talent on the field, he had trouble being consistent and was criticized by both his teammates and the public.

There were warning signs coming from A&M. Manziel was often penalized for his swagger and his iconic “Money Manziel” touchdown celebration. According to CNN, he received a half-game suspension from the NCAA and was also arrested for disorderly conduct and fake identification as a redshirt freshman.

During his first professional preseason, he made an obscene hand gesture on the Washington bench, which became news.
It looked like he would be on the straight and narrow for the remainder of his first season. In November of 2014, there was a scuffle between an acquaintance of Manziel and an allegedly intoxicated fan, but Manziel was cleared of any blame. Soon after, he witnessed his first wide pro snap.

According to a January 2015 Complex article about the quarterback, his friends believed he was often unfit and even partyed too much on game days, leading to hangovers. A friend, who did not wish to be named, said that his work was “100 percent a joke”.
To his credit, Manziel realized he had a problem and checked himself into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Pennsylvania in late January. When he left he made the following statement.

“I owe private apologies to a lot of people that I disappointed but a very public one to the Browns organization and the fans that I let down. I take full responsibility for my actions, and it’s my intention to work very hard to regain everyone’s trust and respect.”

In a Bleacher Report article, it was said that Manziel beat up his ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley in Dallas, Texas. He is said to have fought with her inside and outside of a car, hit her on the ear with an open hand, and threatened to kill both her and himself. Reports say that he only left the scene after they got to her room and she pulled a knife on him.

Crowley told the cops, as reported by News 8, “He grabbed me by my hair and threw me back into the car and got back in himself,”  “He hit me with his open hand on my left ear for jumping out of the car. I realized immediately that I could not hear out of that ear, and I still cannot today, two days later.”

Manzil soon reverted to his hard-partying ways. His short stature was visible when he appeared at Coachella and some other big social events.

For some time Manzil continued to do what he did best, which was drinking and playing football.

After a year out of the league, Manzil would try to get a job in several different pro leagues. In 2018, he played a lot for the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League, but he didn’t do much to stand out.

Per CFL rules, the Alouettes broke Manziel’s contract at the end of the season. According to USA Today, Manziel broke his deal, so he was permanently kicked out of the league.
