Oscar winner Glenda Jackson died at age 87

Glenda Jackson died at age 87 after a short illness, according to Lionel Larner, her director.

“One of the world’s greatest actresses has died, and one of my best friends has died as well,”  he told NPR. He said that Jackson died at her home in London on Thursday morning.

Glenda Jackson had a successful career that earned her Oscar, Tony, and Emmy awards. She also served for 23 years as a member of Parliament’s House of Commons, representing her London area.

The actress and former Labour MP for London’s Hampstead and Highgate won the Oscar for best actress twice, first for Women in Love in 1970 and again for A Touch of Class three years later. However, she didn’t show up to either event.

Her director, Lionel Larner, told the PA news agency, “Glenda Jackson, an actress, and politician who won two Academy Awards, died peacefully this morning at her home in Blackheath, London, after a short illness, with her family by her side.”

Even though she had a great career and won two Baftas, two Emmys, and a Tony, she said she was interested in something other than the social and glamorous parts of the business.

Glenda Jackson was born in Birkenhead, Wirral, in 1936. Her father was a builder, and she quit school at 16 after failing to get her school certificate.

While she worked at her local Boots store, she joined a friend at the YMCA amateur dramatics society to try out playing.

She later got a scholarship to learn acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada).

She started working in company theaters as an actor and stage manager after she graduated from college. She went on to become one of the most well-known talents of her time.

The winner of two Oscars gave up playing more than 25 years ago to become a politician. He was a Labour MP for 23 years.

She became the Labour MP for Hampstead and Highgate in 1992. From 1997 to 1999, she was a junior transport minister in Tony Blair’s government. She became a well-known foe of Blair’s idea, New Labour.
